Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long do sump pumps last?

The average life of a sump pump is 5-7 Years depending on pump activity, soil and water conditions.

  • Why do I need a sump pump?

A sump pump is necessary when you have a basement, or crawl space. The sump pump is in a sump basin, and designed to maintain the water table below the basement, or crawl space floor.

  • Can my sump pump be repaired?

Yes, although it's not common. Most of the time it makes more sense to just replace the sump pump when it fails. Putting new parts on an old sump pump can become almost as costly as replacing it with a new one.

  • What horsepower sump pump is the best?

The average single family home, in a normal water table a 1/3 HP or 1/2HP sump pump is acceptable.

  • Why does my electric breaker trip when my sump pump turns on?

When sump pump start going bad, they start running inefficent and drawing too much energy, resulting in the electric breaker tripping. (Don't call an electrician, call us to replace the pump)

  • Why do sump pumps go bad?

It's more common for the sump pump switch to go bad first, but not always. Replacing the switch is sometines an option, but putting a new switch on an old pump doesn't make sense most of the time.

  • Can I use a extension cord for my sump pump?

It's always best to have the sump pump plugged into a dedicated electric outlet. Having a extension cord is one more thing that can fail, and if the cord is not designed to accept the power of the pump, it can cause issues.

  • Do I need a battery backup sump pump?

The answer is yes. The fact is all sump pumps fail at some point.

  • What is sump pump vapor lock?

Vapor lock usually occures when the sump pump is improperly installed, is when the check valve closes, it can create a suction, thus next time the check valve will not open allowing the sump to discharge water. The PVC pipe must have a weep hole drilled into it, if the weep hole was never drilled, or is clogged this can cause vapor lock.

  • What do I do if the sump discharge freezes in the winter?

If the sump discharge is frozen, cutting the PVC next to the foundation is the best option, allowing the ice to push out of the pipe. This is not a permanent solution, but will allow your sump pump to discharge water from the basement.

  • What are the most common reasons why sump pumps fail?

     ▪ Most common reason is switch problems, or stuck float switch

     ▪ Overworked or underpowered sump pump

    ▪ Loss of power

     ▪ Faulty check valve

    ▪ Frozen sump discharge pipe

    ▪ Faulty sump pump, or just old age
